HISTORY OF THE LIMURU HIGHLANDS
The Limuru Highlands have played a significant role in Kenya’s agricultural and scientific history. Tigoni, in particular, emerged as a centre of research in 1958 when Dr. L.S.B. Leakey and Cynthia Leakey established a primate research facility.
Earlier in the colonial period, settlers such as the McDonnell family chose Tigoni for agricultural experimentation, leading to the establishment of tea farming in the region. Arnold Arthur McDonnell went on to become Kenya’s and Africa’s first commercial tea farmer, helping to lay the foundation for the tea industry that remains central to the country’s economy.
In the 1970s, Tigoni further strengthened its agricultural importance with the establishment of the potato research centre at Muthanga Farm and the relocation of national seed certification and multiplication programmes to the area. Today, Tigoni remains a productive agricultural zone, characterised by extensive tea, coffee, and potato farming.
Surrounding neighbourhoods developed alongside this agricultural backbone. Cianda and Riara Ridge evolved as residential areas closely connected to farming and the landscape. Redhill, named by British colonial soldiers for its striking views towards Nairobi, and Kentmere, home to the Kentmere Club established in the 1920s, became known for their scenic character, social spaces, and retreat-like environment. Together, these areas form the Limuru Highlands, a region shaped by research, agriculture, landscape, and community life.
