Activities

We champion sustainable land stewardship and regenerative agricultural practices that protect biodiversity, soil health, and water resources Tea and coffee
farms are surrounded by tree belts of exotic and indigenous trees to protect and
preserve these areas of outstanding natural beauty. The conservation of rivers,
dams, riparian areas, springs, streams and forests and public open spaces is integral
to all development activities. Some of the projects we are pursuing include;

Bamboo Project

The Bamboo Project is a core environmental and livelihood initiative under the Limuru Highlands Trust’s environmental protection and agro-ecology agenda. It focuses on bamboo planting, training, and sustainable land-use practices as a means of protecting water catchments, preventing soil erosion, and creating green economic opportunities for residents. In collaboration with Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI); the youth from the high density areas of Muna, Tigoni, Karanjee, Mathanja and Mutosi are being trained in bamboo craft making and use. The project aligns with the Trust’s long-term vision of conservation-led development and has been identified as a strong candidate for partnerships with corporate CSR programs, conservation agencies, and grant-making institutions supporting climate resilience and sustainable agriculture.

Bike-a-thon

The annual Bike-A-Thon is one of the Trust’s flagship community engagement and fundraising activities. It is done in collaboration with The Joy Riders, professional biking groups, amateur bikers, corporate sponsors, Kiambu County Tourism Board, neighbourhood service providers, companies, residents and institutions. The goal of the event is to promote healthy lifestyles, environmental awareness, and collective ownership of the Limuru Highlands development agenda. Beyond being a fundraising event, the Bike-A-Thon has played an important role in visibility and advocacy, attracting sponsorship, media coverage, and broad community participation while reinforcing the Trust’s commitment to inclusive, active, and environmentally conscious community life.

Speciality Tea Center

The proposed Specialty Tea Center builds on Limuru Highlands’ long-standing tea-growing heritage and positions tea as both an economic and cultural asset. The tea value addition enterprise development and research is happenning in collaboration with the Tea Research Institute, Hi-Farm, Kenya Export Promotion Council, Nyayo Tea Zone, local tea companies and the Ministry of Agriculture. The center is envisioned as a hub for value addition, education, and visitor engagement, showcasing high-quality tea production, processing, and tasting experiences. It supports diversification of local income streams while strengthening the identity of the Highlands as a premium agricultural zone, open to innovation and market-oriented value chains.
