Background

Between 2017 and 2022, residents of the Limuru Highlands Zone came together to develop the Limuru Highlands Zonal Spatial Plan in response to rapid urbanisation in Kiambu County.
Guided by the principles of the 2010 Constitution, the community sought to take an active role in shaping how their area grows by mobilising residents, building partnerships with County and National Government, and advocating for inclusive decision-making on land use and development.
To safeguard livelihoods, natural heritage, and the long-term sustainability of the region, residents formed the Limuru Highlands Zonal Spatial Planning Committee, raised funds, engaged professional planners, and conducted extensive community consultations.
The plan covers approximately 133 square kilometres across Limuru and parts of Kiambaa Sub-Counties, and the Limuru Highlands Trust was established to guide its adoption, implementation, and ongoing engagement with government authorities, while keeping alive the shared vision of “the Limuru Highlands we want.

The Limuru Highlands Zone brings together residents from Cianda, Riara Ridge, Tigoni, Kabuku, Kawamwaki, Kentmere and Redhill.
